What If I Told You… Newborn Pictures Don’t Need to Be Scheduled Before Two Weeks of Age?

If you’ve ever researched newborn photography, you’ve probably noticed newborn photographers urging parents to schedule their baby’s photo session within the first two weeks after birth. The reason often given is that newborns are sleepier and easier to pose during short window of time. But what if I told you that stunning newborn photos can be captured well beyond the two-week mark?

Yes, you read that right! Here’s why the “two-week rule” isn’t a hard-and-fast rule, and why it might actually be better to take a more relaxed approach to newborn photography.

The Myth of the Two-Week Rule

Many newborn photographers prefer to photograph babies within the first 7–14 days because:

  • Babies are sleepier: They spend more time in deep sleep, making certain poses easier.
  • They retain their “curled” newborn look: Mimicking their position in the womb is more natural.

However, this time frame is a guideline, not a rule. The idea that newborn pictures lose their magic after two weeks is simply a myth.

Why You Can Wait Beyond Two Weeks

There are many reasons to consider waiting longer for newborn photos:

1. More Time for Mom to Heal

The postpartum period is a time of healing and adjustment, especially for first time parents. Rushing into a session too soon can add unnecessary stress. Learning to breastfeed is stressful enough. Waiting allows parents to settle into their new routines, feel more rested, and enjoy the experience with greater ease. Working as a Labor and Delivery nurse for more than 20 years, and having three kids of my own, and being a newborn photographer, I understand the huge transition having a newborn is.

2. Capturing More Expression

As babies grow, their personalities begin to shine through. Older newborns may be more alert, offering a mix of wide-eyed gazes and sweet sleepy moments. These expressions create dynamic, emotive images that tell a fuller story of your baby’s early days.

3. Less Pressure on Scheduling

Births don’t always go as planned, and recovery timelines can vary. By allowing flexibility, you avoid the stress of missing an early window and can book a session when your family feels ready.

This little man was a month old when we took his newborn pictures and he was still sleepy and easy to work with.

Baby Boy Daxel was 3 weeks old for his newborn debut. He didn’t cry once during his first modeling session and it was so sweet to see how much his big sister adores him.
