What is Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

Unlike studio photography, lifestyle newborn sessions allow families to stay comfortable in their own environment. This is especially helpful when navigating life with both a newborn and a toddler. Parents do not need to rush out the door, pack endless supplies, or stress about keeping schedules perfectly aligned.
Instead, everyone can move at their own pace. Therefore, toddlers tend to feel safer and more relaxed at home, which often leads to more natural interactions and genuine smiles.
As a Sonoma County Photographer, my goal is always to create a calm and stress-free experience while documenting the beauty of real family life.
Unique Benefits for Your Family
One of the most beautiful parts of this newborn lifestyle session was watching the family slow down together. Between diaper changes, feeding breaks, and toddler giggles, there were quiet moments of love woven throughout the entire experience.

Lifestyle sessions beautifully document those in-between moments:
- Tiny fingers wrapped around mom’s hand
- A proud older sibling peeking into the crib
- Parents soaking in their baby’s newborn features
- Cozy snuggles on the couch at home
Furthermore, these sessions tell the story of a family growing together in a season that passes far too quickly.
How to Choose the Right Photographer

Choosing someone to document your newborn’s first days is deeply personal. After all, these moments are fleeting, emotional, and impossible to recreate. That is why finding a photographer with both experience and a calming presence can make all the difference during your session.
As a Sonoma County Newborn Photographer, I bring over 15 years of newborn photography experience along with 25 years of experience as a Labor and Delivery nurse. Because of this unique background, I understand not only how to safely handle and soothe newborns, but also how emotional and transformative the postpartum season can feel for parents.
Throughout your session, my goal is to create a relaxed and supportive environment where families feel comfortable being themselves. Whether your baby needs extra cuddles, feeding breaks, or time to settle, I approach every session with patience and understanding. In addition, my experience working with newborns and growing families allows me to gently guide sibling interactions while keeping the experience stress-free for everyone involved.
For first-time parents, having someone who understands newborn behavior and postpartum recovery can bring an extra layer of reassurance. Likewise, families welcoming a second or third baby often appreciate the flexibility and calm approach that comes from years of working with both newborns and toddlers.
As a Sonoma County Newborn Photographer, I believe your images should feel authentic, timeless, and filled with genuine connection. More importantly, I want families to leave their session feeling cared for, supported, and confident that these precious memories were beautifully preserved.
Preparing for a Lifestyle Newborn Session

Preparing for an in-home newborn session does not need to feel stressful. In fact, the beauty of lifestyle photography is that it embraces real life and genuine connection rather than perfection.
Before your session, try to focus on a few simple things:
- Open blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible
- Tidy up the main spaces you would like photographed, such as the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room
- Choose neutral and comfortable clothing that coordinates without matching exactly
- Have a few meaningful baby items nearby, such as a special blanket or heirloom
- Feed baby shortly before the session when possible to encourage sleepy cuddles
Additionally, it helps to prepare toddlers by talking about the photographer coming over and making the experience feel fun and relaxed. Giving older siblings breaks, snacks, and space to play can make a huge difference throughout the session.
As a Sonoma County Newborn Photographer, I always remind families that perfection is never the goal. The most meaningful images often come from the unexpected moments — a toddler climbing into mom’s lap, baby stretching during a yawn, or parents laughing together in the middle of the chaos.

One more thing, one of the most frequently asked question is “what do I wear?” I have a selection of dresses in my client closet for moms to borrow from, but some of my favorite places to order from are Zara and Free People.
